OTTO x WILDPLASTIC®

The first mailing bag that cleans up the world.

Driving Change Together

For almost two years, OTTO and WILDPLASTIC® have been working together to improve the environment. The result is the world's first mailing bag made from collected wild plastic.

OTTO’s journey to sustainable packaging led them to WILDPLASTIC® in 2019 via their network, captivated by the potential for tangible environmental and social impact. This sparked extensive dialogue, material examinations, design sprints, and a pilot production, culminating in our shared mission: crafting a mailing bag comprising a minimum of 80% WILDPLASTIC®.

The Journey

Initial Engagements

The first interactions between OTTO and WILDPLASTIC® took place at the end of 2019, which, after the initial consensus, expanded to include suppliers of plastic films and mailing bags, with the focus on the practicality of the material.

The Test Phase

In mid-2020, a pilot initiative was launched in which 10,000 mailing bags were produced. The success prompted a market study with customer feedback, the results of which were carefully analyzed.

Scaling the Partnership

Following the pilot test, we held talks on scaling up and concluded a contract. The fall of 2021 marked the official start of the partnership between OTTO and WILDPLASTIC®.

Looking Ahead

Our collaborative efforts persist, and in January 2023 OTTO announced that they will from now on only use Ottobags consisting of 80 % WILDPLASTIC®.

From Trash to Mailing Bag

Where does the Wild Plastic actually come from and how is it processed?

1. Recover

We work together with collection organizations in countries without sufficient waste management systems like India or Indonesia. In collaboration with them local waste collectors gather and sort wild plastic by hand.

2. Refurbish

After the wild plastic is sorted it gets washed and shredded and is ready for the next step - the recycling.

3. Recycle

The wild plastic undergoes the recycling into WILD granules, preferably locally or alternatively at our Portuguese recycling partner. This transforms wild waste into a resource.

4. Wild Mailing Bag

In a last step our WILDproducts are produced out of the granules. From there our products get transported to logistics centers, ready to be delivered to our customers.

Impact Materials

The OTTOBAG is crafted from recycled WILD LDPE, alongside other materials like HDPE or PP from our global partners.

LDPE

LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene): Used for soft packaging solutions like waste bags and shipping bags.

HDPE

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene): Employed for harder packaging solutions like bottles and packaging fibers.

PP

PP (Polypropylene): Applied in hard packaging solutions like bottles, caps, and furniture.

Let’s free the world from plastic waste

It needs many of us, actually all of us to create a real impact. Therefore we are extremely glad to have a partner such as OTTO by our side supporting us in our mission.

But changing the material of the OTTO mailing bags to WILDPLASTIC® is just the beginning. We have so many ideas, and there are still 6.3 billion tons of plastic to be recovered. That is why we are thrilled to find more partners who want to explore new paths with us.
